During the 8th – 14th June Mendicity carried out its annual census among 123 of our regular clients. The results demonstrate that the circumstances of our clients have worsened over the past 12 months, as more are sleeping outside and many have struggled to access the services they needed during the Covid-19 crisis. Many are staying in Private Emergency Accommodation, where they are not receiving the supports they need. Since the beginning of Lockdown, 74% have slept outside at least once and 17% have slept outside continuously. Many of our clients are sleeping rough, however they are still omitted from the overall homeless figure. With them included, there would be a different picture of homelessness in Dublin.
Throughout Lockdown, Mendicity remained open 7 days a week for those who rely on our services. Despite recent reductions in homeless figures issued by government, our service has remained busy with people attending daily.
